Ooty: The Queen of Hill Stations

Nestled high in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, Ooty (officially known as Udhagamandalam) remains one of India’s most enduring hill station escapes. Originally established as the summer headquarters of the British Madras Presidency, it continues to captivate travelers with its cool mountain breeze, emerald-green tea plantations, and colonial-era charm. The landscape is defined by rolling hills draped in terraced tea gardens, dense eucalyptus forests, and misty valleys. At the heart of the town lies the expansive Ooty Lake, where visitors can enjoy quiet boat rides surrounded by towering blue gum trees. Just a short distance away, the 55-acre Government Botanical Garden houses hundreds of species of exotic plants, vibrant flowers, and a 20-million-year-old fossilized tree trunk. For panoramic vistas, Doddabetta Peak—the highest point in the Nilgiri mountains—offers sweeping views of the surrounding highlands and, on a clear day, views stretching out to the distant plains. No trip to Ooty is complete without riding the historic Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site that chugs through dark tunnels, across towering stone viaducts, and past steep ravines, offering a nostalgic journey through breathtaking mountain terrain. Route from Kozhikode (Calicut) to Ooty Traveling from Kozhikode to Ooty takes you from the coast of Kerala up into the Western Ghats, transitioning from tropical palm-fringed roads to winding mountain hairpins. The total distance is approximately 155 to 165 km, and the drive typically takes between 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on road and weather conditions. Primary Driving Route via NH 766 & Nilambur (The Most Common Route) 👉: Kozhikode to Thamarassery (approx. 30 km) — Start from Kozhikode and head east along NH 766 toward Adivaram at the base of the mountains. 👉: The Thamarassery Churam / Ghat Pass (approx. 15 km) — Navigate the famous Thamarassery Ghat, featuring 9 hairpin bends that offer stunning valley views as you climb rapidly in elevation. 👉: Lakkidi to Sultan Bathery via Wayanad (approx. 45 km) — Continue through the scenic hill district of Wayanad, passing through Vythiri, Kalpetta, and Sulthan Bathery. 👉: Sulthan Bathery to Gudalur (approx. 40 km) — Cross the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, passing through portions of the Mudumalai/Wayanad forest reserves where wildlife sightings are common. 👉: Gudalur to Ooty (approx. 35 km) — Ascend the final stretch of winding mountain roads from Gudalur up through Pine Forests and Pykara before arriving in Ooty. Travel Tips Air & Rail Starting Point: If arriving via Calicut International Airport (CCJ) or Kozhikode Railway Station (CLT), you can hire a private taxi directly to Ooty or take a local bus to the Kozhikode KSRTC/Municipal bus stand to catch regional buses headed toward Kalpetta/Gudalur. Ghat Driving: The mountain stretches feature numerous sharp turns. If prone to motion sickness, medication is recommended before tackling the ghat sections.
